General Pet Surgery

Our animals are just as likely to develop illnesses or injuries as we are, and just like us, sometimes surgery is the best course of action to resolve the issues that they are facing. Other types of surgery are elective, meaning that you choose for your pet to have them because they offer significant benefits for your cute creature.

We are delighted to be able to offer a range of general surgery services at our pet clinic in Las Vegas, NV. Sterility is an essential component of any general surgery setting, and our practice operates a rigorous infection control protocol that ensures that all procedures are carried out to the highest safety standards.

Spaying/Neutering

Neutering is the most common elective procedure that we perform and is arguably the most sought-after surgery for pet owners across the country. This is because removing the reproductive capabilities of your pet has a range of important benefits and should be a priority for any responsible pet owner.

You may hear the procedure is referred to by numerous names, including spaying, castration, and neutering. However, they all relate to the removal of the reproductive organs in your pet. In females, this is the ovaries and uterus, and in males, it is the testes. Both are carried out under general anesthetic to ensure that your pet isn’t in pain or distress. As you would expect, the procedure itself is a little more complex in females due to the location of the ovaries and uterus inside your pet’s body. This means that a fairly large incision needs to be made into her abdomen for them to be removed. In males, the procedure is typically much more straightforward since the testes, unless undescended, are on the outside of your pet’s body. This means an incision can be made into the scrotum rather than the main abdominal area. In both cases, your pet will need adequate rest afterward so that they can recover and heal.

Some of the main benefits of spaying/neutering include:

  • Prevention of unwanted pregnancy

  • A small contribution towards preventing further overcrowding of animals in shelters awaiting homes

  • Reducing/eliminating aggression

  • Prevention of roaming

  • Your pet is less likely to badger females

  • Stop urine marking

  • Eliminating the risks of some types of cancer including uterine, ovarian or testicular

  • Significant reduction in the risk of breast cancer in pets

  • Prevention of pyometra – a deadly uterine infection

  • Elimination of prostate problems

If you have any questions about the benefits of neutering for your pet, our team would be happy to advise you.
